Erstwhile FDT (Future Defence Technology) and Air Space Dtes were merged and re-assigned to form Future Technology Directorate of Technology & Indigenisation Division. All tasks pertaining to the erstwhile FDT (Future Defence Technology) were assigned to the Future Technology Directorate.

Future Technology Directorate at HQ IDS is responsible to study and assess emerging weapon systems & technologies around the world and estimate their utility and effects on warfare in our armed forces and make suitable recommendations on emerging technologies having applicability for three Services. The Directorate assists Tri-service institutions under HQ IDS in identification and formulation of futuristic R & D projects, updates technology related documents issued by HQ IDS, and Interacts with Academia and Department of Science & Technology for expert inputs on emerging / futuristic technologies. It also coordinates the attendance of HQ IDS representatives for various Defence Exhibitions and seminars in areas of interest in India/ abroad, participates in seminars and exhibitions conducted by organisations like FICCI, CII etc. This helps the Directorate to identify capability of developing emerging technologies in civil industry.

The Directorate is haeaded by an Air Commodore who has two Colonel equivalent level officers working under him bringing in the Tri-Services perspective. Apart from the above mentioned duties, Colonel (Future Technology) is the nodal officer for the Technology Development Fund (TDF) of the DRDO in asssessing & identifying private sector companies for the grant of Defence Technology projects.
